  Bachelor of Agro -Technology (Honors) Degree Program  

The University of Colombo Institute of Agro-Technology and Rural Sciences (UCIARS) was established as an Institute with blended distance mode of teaching to provide opportunities of higher education to farming community across barriers of age, space, time and academic background, under Section 24 A and Section 18 of the Universities Act no 16 of 1978 and the University of Colombo Institute of Agro-technology and Rural Sciences Ordinance No. 02 of 20082. The Order under Section 24 A came into operation with effect from 23rd August 2008. The establishment of this Institute heralded an era of affirmative action on the part of the Government of Sri Lanka to “uplift farming in Sri Lanka as a prestigious occupation through arming the farming community with modern knowledge and information technology”.The Institute has a mandate to “providing, promoting and developing among persons presently engaged in Agriculture and Agro-Technology, higher education in the discipline of Agro-Technology and Rural Sciences”.   • The Council of the University of Colombo shall have authority to confer the Degree of Bachelor of Agro-Technology Honors on a person who has been recommended for the conferment of the said Degree by the Senate of the University.
  • The Senate shall not make such a recommendation unless the person has successfully fulfilled all requirements and conditions, including those relating to the Programme of Study and assessment, laid down in these By-Laws and has complied with other Rules and Regulations of the University.
  • The minimum period of study for which a person shall be a registered student of the programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Agro-Technology Honours shall be four academic years and any person admitted to the programme shall complete it within a period of eight (Group A students)/ ten (Group B students)/ academic years from the date of first registration.

Admission to the program will only be granted if the individual meets the following criteria

Group A students
Three passes in G.C.E (A/L) in Science Stream or Technology Stream subjects.
And
Pass the selection examination conducted by the Institute.
Group B students
03 passes in GCE (A/L) and Three years of experience in the field of Agriculture
(Certified by an Agriculture Instructor and Development Officer in the Agrarian Center
in the relevant area of residence) and
or
Pass in the GCE (O/L) including Science and Mathematics subjects (Six passes with
three credits) and Five years of experience in the field of Agriculture (Certified by an
Agriculture Instructor and Development Officer in the Agrarian Center in the relevant
area of residence)
or
Any other equivalent qualifications acceptable to the Senate of the University of
Colombo
and
Pass the selection examination conducted by the Institute
For lateral entry students:
Applicants who have completed a Diploma (NVQ Level 05) in Agriculture from
recognized institutes can enter to the second year after completing 30 credits Bridging
course.
or
Applicants who have completed a Higher Diploma (NVQ Level 06) in Agriculture
from recognized institutes can enter to the third year after completing 60 credits
Bridging course

  • The admission of a person to the programme leading to the Degree of Bachelor of AgroTechnology Honours (hereinafter sometime referred to as “the programme”) conducted by the University of Colombo Institute for Agro-Technology and Rural Sciences (the UCIARS) shall be done by the Senate of the University of Colombo.
  • A person who has been admitted to the programme under the law or relevant regulation in force shall register himself/herself with the UCIARS by returning the duly perfected registration form.
  • It shall be the duty and responsibility of the student who is admitted to the UCIARS to keep his registration valid by paying the prescribed fees in time until he/she completes the programme.
  • The registration shall be, unless otherwise decided by the Senate on the recommendation of the Board of Management (hereinafter sometime referred to as “the Board”) of the UCIARS, valid for four academic years and shall be renewed semester wise subject to the provisions of these By-Laws.
  • A person willing to register for the programme shall submit his/her application to the designated officer when the said programme is advertised. The advertisement shall nominate the designated officer.

Student for the Bachelor of Honors Degree program shall be four years.

However, the students will be required to update their registration semester wise.
